Pirate Radio - Drives you mad

Drives you mad...

A short video I made featuring archive documentary footage of the early pirate radio, UK Garage and Jungle scenes, and touching on the theme of what it means to create a truly authentic 'UK' sound.

A new generation of pirate radio stations in the mid-90s and early 2000's helped push genres that weren't being served by mainstream radio, such as UK Garage and Jungle. Young people (often teenagers) illegally broadcasting their raw, unfiltered music from the top of council estates, became a breeding ground for young MCs, DJs and producers, some of whom have gone on to become some of the most revered musicians the UK has produced.

As well as this, stations with their roots in pirate radio such as Rinse FM and Flex FM have now developed into legal stations and remain hugely influential in underground UK music, championing that UK sound!
